Data and Specimen Biorepository

The Biorepository combines the usage of dental and medical clinical information with a biological specimen DNA bank for researchers to use at the UI College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. Patients and visitors at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics, the UI Center for Disabilities and Development, the UI Hospitals and Clinics Department of Otolaryngology and staff will be asked to participate and give consent for their clinical information and biological specimen to be collected for undefined future research purposes that will be shared, used again, or stored for future dental research purposes. Researchers can utilize the repository to study any type of health condition or disease.

To collect biological specimens for undefined future research purposes that will be share, used again, or stored for future dental research purposes. Researchers can utilize the repository to study any type of health condition or disease.

Various Studies

Currently recruiting

Genetics’ Role in the Growth of the Craniofacial Complex

To identify how different facial types develop and how genes modify facial growth and teeth development in order to find a way to improve orthodontic and surgical treatment.

Craniofacial Studies

Recruitment by referral only

Oral Health Intervention for Persons with Dementia

Aim 1. Develop a functionally-tailored, modular oral care intervention for community-dwelling PWD and their caregivers.
Aim 2. Conduct a 4-week study of the proposed intervention among 8 pairs of community-dwelling PWD and their caregivers, evaluating the feasibility of the proposed intervention.

Study Objective Type Status

Simvastatin Implant Study

Determined the anti-inflammatory effect of Simvastatin when applied topically around implants with inflamed gums.

Implant Studies

Closed to recruitment

AlloDerm

A study on soft tissue grafting around implants.

The purpose of this research study is to determine whether you will have a better outcome with a gum graft harvested from the roof of your mouth or a human tissue graft and how you perceive both discomfort and the esthetics of the graft during the healing period.

Implant Studies

Complete

Atlantis1

A two-arm, parallel group, randomized controlled clinical trial on adult human subjects receiving divergent or concave Atlantis™ abutments to assess peri-implant mucosa changes from prosthesis delivery to 1 year.

  • (Primary) Compare the influence of experimental concavities in the subgingival transition zone of Atlantis™ abutments on peri-implant mucosal dynamics from final restoration delivery to one year, as compared to current Atlantis™ abutments with linear divergent transition profiles.
  • (Secondary) Quantify the horizontal soft tissue thickness changes around concave and divergent abutment transition profiles from final restoration delivery to one year.
  • (Secondary) Evaluate changes in peri-implant health indicators, such as Gingival Index (GI), Probing Pocket Depth (PPD), and Bleeding on Probing (BOP).

Implant Studies

Complete

Laser-Lok

A dental implant research study to compare two different implant abutment designs, micro grooved or machined, in order to determine if these texture differences have any impact on the healing of your jaw bone and gums after implant surgery.

Implant Studies

Complete

PLUS1

A randomized clinical trial assessing implant stability, marginal bone levels, and long-term implant survival between the Astra Tech OsseoSpeed TX and OsseoSpeed Plus implant systems.

Implant Studies

Complete

PROOF

A randomized clinical trial comparing the buccal soft tissue changes and marginal bone levels occurring around single-tooth implants in the maxilla using three different implant-abutment interface designs.

Implant Studies

Complete

SCOOP

A randomized clinical trial comparing marginal bone level alterations between 6mm and 11 mm Astra Tech OsseoSpeed implants in posterior jaws.

Implant Studies

Complete

3M

A partially randomized study to evaluate the demineralization and remineralization effects of 2 experimental fluoride containing dentifrices on enamel and root surface lesions relative to a control dentifrice.

Restorative Studies

Complete

ADA Chewing Gum Study

The purpose of this research study is to determine if there is any difference in salivary flow rates and plaque pH changes as a result of chewing three different sugar free chewing gums.  Subjects will use the three test chewing gums at approximately the same time each day.

Preventative Studies

Complete

AST1

A randomized clinical trial examining changes in implant stability upon three different loading regimens during the first 16 weeks following implant placement.

Salivary Lipids

The purpose of this research is to determine if there are any differences in lipid content and composition in saliva from people with healthy gums compared to people with gum disease.   After giving informed consent, subjects would provide their age, undergo an oral examination by a dentist and spit into a tube for 15 minutes.  The entire process would take about 40 minutes.  Compensation is available.
