Public and Private Dental Safety Net in Iowa

Dec 16, 2014

The ACA’s Medicaid expansion and Marketplace options will expand the number of people with dental insurance coverage. This will place an additional load on public and private dental providers by increasing demand for services, particularly due to the severity of dental disease in populations who were formerly uninsured.

The University of Iowa Public Policy Center evaluated the current and future capacity of the dental safety net in response to this increased demand. Their study of community health centers (public safety net) and private practitioners (private safety net) in Iowa serves as a way to model similar issues for other parts of the United States. The Public and Private Dental Safety Net: Implementation of the ACA and their Roles in Access to Care for Medicaid and Expansion Populations, is the third in a series of policy briefs describing policy-relevant topics for the primary safety net.

Mark Sullivan

Dr. Mark Sullivan, a Department of Endodontics resident, was recently given the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Service Star Award.

Oct 07, 2014

Dr. Mark Sullivan, an Endodontics resident, was recognized as a Service Star Awardee in August for his personal care of a dental patient. The patient’s wife wrote the following letter:

My husband was treated by Dr. Mark Sullivan in endodontics for an abscessed tooth that caused my husband intense pain. My husband has severe anxiety issues and a motion disorder, which affected his reaction to the treatment for his tooth. Although Dr. Sullivan did everything he could to help my husband’s pain, his anxiety and motion disorder caused his entire body to shake uncontrollably.

My husband had walked to UI Hospitals and Clinics for the appointment, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to walk back home. Dr. Sullivan personally walked downstairs with my husband to meet a taxicab that had been called and already paid for! Others offered to stay with my husband until the cab arrived, but Dr. Sullivan insisted on staying with my husband and seeing that he was safely in the cab and on his way home.

My husband and I were both impressed that Dr. Sullivan took such personal care for him and stayed with him during a very difficult time for my husband. We are both very grateful for Dr. Sullivan’s care for my husband.

Dr. Clark Stanford

Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research and professor of prosthodontics at the College of Dentistry, has been named dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

May 30, 2014

Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research and professor of prosthodontics at the College of Dentistry, has been named dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

“Illinois will be a better place because Clark is arriving, and Iowa will be a different place because Clark is leaving. While Clark cannot be replaced, he has left a sound legacy that will endure. I will personally miss Clark as a colleague, mentor, and friend, and I look forward to working with him as a fellow Big Ten Dean,” said COD Dean David Johnsen.

A native of Northbrook, Illinois, Stanford arrived at the Iowa City campus as an undergraduate in 1979 and never left. He received a bachelor’s of science degree in 1984, a doctor of dental science degree in 1987, and a certificate in prosthodontics and Ph.D. in cell biology in 1992. He joined Iowa’s faculty that same year.

An accomplished researcher whose work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, private foundations and industry, Stanford focuses his laboratory studies on osteoblastic gene expression and signaling pathways. He is the author of 18 book chapters, 111 published papers and more than 140 research abstracts.

Stanford currently serves on several national and international committees, including the International Association for Dental Research, the National Institutes of Health, the Academy of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Osseointegration.

Stanford has won 15 teaching awards, including the 2007 State of Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Science Award that same year. He also treats patients for complex rehabilitation, with an emphasis in craniofacial anomalies, in an intramural practice at the college.

Project SEALED, a University of Iowa initiative, provides oral care for schoolchildren in northeast Allamakee County, Iowa.

May 13, 2014

Clean teeth mean happy and healthy children—and possibly a career as a dentist.

That’s the thrust behind a University of Iowa initiative in Allamakee County, Iowa, where third-year UI College of Dentistry students travel four times a year to check schoolchildren’s teeth, offer tips for oral care, and show what it means to be a community dentist.

The program, called Project SEALED, started nearly two years ago as a partnership between the UI and school systems in Postville and Waukon. To date, about 100 dental students have provided care for up to 700 elementary and middle school children in Postville and Waukon.

Dan Caplan, UI dentistry professor and organizer of Project SEALED, says the outreach is much more than helping an underserved population in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the state. For one, the UI dental students get hands-on experience working in the field, as they think about their careers.

Kaitlin Hoogeveen says the experience reinforces her desire to open a practice in rural, northwest Iowa. “We really love the small town, and the support from the community,” says Hoogeveen, who’s from Sioux Center.

The schoolchildren find out what it’s like to be a dentist, too. To underscore that message, some of them came to Iowa City this month to tour the College of Dentistry and learn more about dentistry.

Dr. Casko

Dr. John S. Casko, professor emeritus at the UI College of Dentistry, honored by the American Board of Orthodontics.

May 06, 2014

Dr. John S. Casko, professor emeritus at the UI College of Dentistry, was awarded the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, the highest honor given by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO), on April 27, 2014, at the Excellence in Orthodontics Awards Ceremony, held in New Orleans, La.

The award, created in 1936 to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Albert H. Ketcham, is given annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics.

Dr. Casko, a past president of the ABO, is Professor Emeritus and the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics Emeritus at the UI College of Dentistry.

Dr. Casko joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1976. He served as head of the Department of Orthodontics from 1976 to 2002. In 2000, he was named the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics, the first endowed chair at the UI College of Dentistry. He retired from the University of Iowa in 2013.

“The ABO is very pleased to recognize Dr. Casko with this prestigious award,” said Dr. Marvin Kastrop, the 2013-14 president of the ABO. “Dr. Casko has contributed greatly to the specialty of orthodontics. …He has said that his greatest satisfaction is seeing how successful his residents have become and how much they contribute back to dentistry and the specialty of orthodontics. In addition, his sphere of influence extends beyond the University of Iowa. Many orthodontists from all over the world have benefited from his life’s work.”

Dr. Casko received both his D.D.S. and M.S. in orthodontics from Georgetown University in 1964 and 1968, respectively. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. He has been an ABO Diplomate since 1981 and recertified in 1999.

Dr. Casko is a member and past president of the Angle Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and editor of Practical Reviews in Orthodontics.

During his career in orthodontic education, Dr. Casko gave more than 200 orthodontic presentations nationally and internationally, taught more than 230 orthodontic residents and received numerous awards. In 2009, the Southern Association of Orthodontists presented him with the Orthodontic Legend Award in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in orthodontic education through teaching, research and publishing.

“This is the highest award I can get as an orthodontist, and it is very special to me …because it symbolizes the recognition of my peers,” Dr. Casko said. “This award is a wonderful complement to the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award that I received in 2008.

To be included on the list of past recipients of the Ketcham Award is incredibly humbling. This list also brings to mind friends and colleagues who received this award, but are no longer with us. So many wonderful people have received this award; I am grateful to be included among them.”

Mari Heslinga

Mari Heslinga (D2) Selected for the Paul Ambrose Scholars Program.

Apr 18, 2014

Mari Heslinga, a second-year student with the College of Dentistry, has been accepted into the Paul Ambrose Scholars Program (PASP), part of the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR).

PASP prepares public health and clinical health professions students to address population health challenges at the national and community level, seeking to meet the current and future health needs of the public. PASP provides mini-grant funds to selected students to implement a Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators project within students’ communities or at their academic institutions.

Since 2002, more than 500 students from over 160 academic institutions have become Paul Ambrose Scholars. The program is named after Paul Ambrose, M.D., M.P.H., a rising star in the medical community who lost his life on September 11, 2001, in the American Airlines flight 77 crash. His commitment to promoting public health and preventing disease was a critical force in the development of The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity for which he served as a senior editor. Following his personal vision, PASP supports leadership development for students pursuing careers in preventive medicine and public health.

As a 2014 PASP Scholar, Mari will attend the Student Leadership Symposium in Washington, District of Columbia, from June 20-22, 2014. Mari will be among 40 health professions students from across the country. During the Symposium, scholars will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and varying attitudes toward public health and learn methods to affect change in their own community. Past Symposium speakers include prominent public health officials such as Surgeons General, Assistant Secretaries for Health and other governmental officials, industry experts, and veteran public health practitioners.

Each student scholar will receive a $200.00 stipend after completing the Symposium activities. The stipend will be used to implement a community-based project addressing one of the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators (LHIs). Student scholars have up to one year to complete their projects and request reimbursement for their project-related expenses (up to $350.00).

Mari is very excited to become part of the program, and is thankful to her mentor, Dr. Steve Levy,Preventive & Community Dentistry, for his support and his time. Mari says, "This is going to be a great project to work on."

April issue of JADA

Dr. Sath Allareddy and co-authors published a lead article in the April issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA).

Apr 14, 2014

Dr. Sath Allareddy, along with co-autors Romesh Nalliah, Min Kyeong Lee, Veerajalandhar Allareddy and Sankeerth Rampa, published a lead article in the April issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). The article, titled Hospital-Based Emergency Department Visits Involving Dental Conditions: Profile and Predictors of Poor Outcomes and Resource Utilization, examines how untreated dental conditions may progress to severe lesions and lead to emergency visits to hospitals. The study reviewed trends in hospital-based emergency department (ED) visits involving dental conditions and associated patient charges.

The study examined data (2008 – 2010) from ED visits involving patients with a diagnosis of either dental caries, pulpal or periapical lesions, gingival or periodontal conditions, or mouth cellulitis or abscess. The authors found that about one percent of all ED visits in this country involved a dental condition. About 40.5 percent of all dental condition-related ED visits were uninsured patients. The mean hospital ED charge per visit was approximately $760.

The study determined patients without insurance are at high risk of seeking dental care in ED settings, and patients with mouth cellulitis, periodontal conditions and numerous comorbidities are likely to experience higher charges. The authors concluded that dental conditions can be treated more effectively in a dental office than in hospital-based settings.

For more information on this article, contact Dr. Sath Allareddy, associate professor, Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, the University of iowa.

An ADEA article about underserved areas being served by recent grads.

Apr 09, 2014

A new article published in the latest issue of the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) scholarly publication, the Journal of Dental Education (JDE), illustrates the need for dental schools to become actively involved in recruiting students to practice dentistry in underserved areas. The article provides an example for how to implement such a program.

“Every state school has the responsibility to work to assure a dental workforce for their state,” said David C. Johnsen, D.D.S., M.S., Dean of The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (UI COD).

The JDE article, “Retaining New Dentists in Iowa: A Role for Dental Schools in Facilitating Graduates’ Connections to Practice Opportunities in Underserved Areas,” shows how UI COD addressed the concomitant problems of having an aging dental workforce and a high percentage of counties designated as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (DHPSAs) in the state of Iowa. The article was written by Debra A. Hoyle, B.S.W.; Penni M. Ryan, B.L.S., C.P.P.; Jed S. Hand, D.D.S., M.H.S.A.; Peter Damiano, D.D.S., M.P.H.; and Galen B. Schneider, D.D.S., Ph.D.

In June 2006, the college, along with grant support from Delta Dental of Iowa, created the Office of Iowa Practice Opportunities (OIPO) to promote dental practice opportunities throughout the state. The office and its advisory committee developed and defined a list of six objectives to improve dentistry in Iowa: (1) develop and maintain a web-accessible database of dental practice opportunities, (2) coordinate a student-mentor program, (3) develop a network of partners to assist in identifying and working with communities seeking a dentist, (4) sponsor presentations to dental students highlighting the advantages of practice in Iowa and providing information on available resources, (5) travel to predominantly rural Iowa communities to help those communities recruit dentists and (6) facilitate communications between students and those offering practice opportunities.

Since the establishment of the OIPO, the number of dentists under the age of 40 in Iowa has increased 77%. These dentists now compose 29% of Iowa’s dental workforce. The number of counties designated as DHPSAs also has decreased from 79 to 68. As of June 30, 2012, the OIPO had coordinated 141 placements for practices in 63 Iowa communities, and 70 of these placements were in rural communities. Moreover, an average of 25 students, in the typically 75-student graduating class, go on to pursue practice opportunities in the state following graduation.

The success of Iowa’s program prompted several other schools to consult with the college to develop their own programs. The authors believe that the OIPO could be used as a model for other statewide dental organizations.

“We see this as an opportunity for our college to add value to our state and university as well,” said Dr. Johnsen. “This program has become a key component in our efforts to recruit students from all over Iowa and to make it attractive to serve Iowa’s citizens.”

Michael Finkelstein

Michael W. Finkelstein, 1951-2013: In Memoriam.

Jan 03, 2014

Michael W. Finkelstein was born in Los Angeles, California.  His family relocated to Carthage, Illinois, when he was only six months old to be near his mother’s family. As an adolescent, he worked in the family business. Following completion of a BS degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois and a DDS degree from the University of Iowa in 1976, Mike served our country as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.  Mike returned to Iowa and while undergoing specialty training, he met Twila, the love of his life. They were married in 1980.  Mike completed a certificate and MS degree in oral and maxillofacial pathology at the University of Iowa in 1982.  Mike was a Fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Mike was hired by the College of Dentistry where he taught histology, anatomy and oral pathology for 31 years.  Additionally, he taught histology for the University of Iowa College of Medicine and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Mike was the consummate role model for the students, colleagues and patients who were touched by his gentle demeanor.  He taught without bravado, never sought the limelight and gave credit to others for his accomplishments. Mike always put the needs of his students first and foremost. He was a kind, inspiring spirit for the now tens of thousands of people who were touched by him. Mike had a rare gift for reaching out to every person he met with an always upbeat manner.  He had high standards that he carried gracefully. Over the decades, countless people have said they are better people for having known Mike.

In recognition of his teaching and educational research accomplishments, his students presented him with Distinguished Instructor of the Year Awards 34 times, and the College bestowed on Mike the first Centennial Endowed Professor of Teaching & Curriculum. In further recognition of his accomplishments, he received the University of Iowa President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, the James H. McLeran Faculty Award, and the President's Award by the Iowa Dental Association.
