Dr. John Hellstein, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, is first author on a newly published Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) article, "Managing the care of patients receiving antiresorptive therapy for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis: executive summary of recommendations from the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs." The article was published in the November 2012 issue of JADA.
Dr. Hellstein is currently chair of the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs.
Dr. Veeratrishul Allareddy, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, is now a representative of the American Dental Association (ADA) to the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Committee. The committee, which includes 28 working groups, creates and maintains international standards for communication of bio-medical diagnostic and therapeutic information in disciplines that use digital images and associated data. The committee's goals are to improve digital communication compatibility in all areas of health care and to improve workflow efficiency between imaging systems and other information systems in healthcare environments worldwide.
Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Dows and Department of Prosthodontics, gave presentations in Australia. On November 17, he participated in a round table to discuss Improving the Oral Health of Older Australians, including oral health in the longitudinal study of older men, called the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (CHAMPS). Dr. Ettinger talked about epidemiological surveys that have been conducted in the U.S. involving the oral health of older people, the oral health components of the studies, oral and quality of life indices that were used, the relationship to demographic and biological aspects of aging, and the policies and programs, which were developed as a result of the studies. The round table was held at the Univeersity of Sydney Concord Hospital Clinical Sciences Building.
On November 18, Dr. Ettinger gave another presentation, "International Context of Experience in Oral Health Care. What Can be Learnt from the Iowa Studies?" He also led an afternoon workshop, "Acute Sector Needs, Protocols, Policies, and Processes."
Lauren Harvey (D2) has been selected to receive a $2,500 Predoctoral Dental Student Scholarship from the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Ms. Mary Lynn Eckert, Office of Curriculum Development, has received the University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Award for her "outstanding accomplishments and contributions that significantly benefited or brought honor or recognition to the university."
In being nominated for the award, it was noted that "Mary Lynn consistently exudes professionalism and has impeccable character."
In her capacity in the Office of Curriculum Development, she has been the essential central organizer for curriculum." She is also instrumental in organizing the meetings of the Curriculum Committee, creating agenda for the meetings, and recording all minutes. She has been responsible for implementing the ICON system and instructing faculty about its use. She was the point person during the preparation activity prior to the recent American Dental Association Accreditation self-study and site visit, which represented a considerable commitment of time and effort.
Ms. Eckert received her award during a banquet that was held on October 12, 2011, at the Levitt Center. Dr. Jed Hand, Dental Administration, his wife Pat, and Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, and his wife, Twila, attended the banquet that honored Mary Lynn and thirteen other UI staff, including Dr. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore, an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, and former staff in the department.
Dr. David Drake, Department of Endodontics and Dows, has received the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. The award honors faculty members for work representing a significant contribution to excellence in public education. As a researcher, he and his team are currently studying the microbiology of dental caries in Native American children who are at high risk for early caries.
Dr. Drake served as president of the UI Faculty Senate from 2009-10, earning respect for his ability to face challenges, including budget cuts and the continuing flood recovery. His collegiate, university, and national committee work has also included being a consultant to the American Dental Association's Council of Scientific Affairs, a reviewer of R21 grants for the Special Emphasis Panel of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research, and currently serving as senior associate to President Sally Mason.
Dr. Drake received the award during a banquet that was held on October 12, 2011, at the Levitt Center.
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, gave a presentation at the Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics meeting on October 31, 2011, which was held in Scottsdale, Arizona. His talk was entitled "Management of the Ectodermal Dysplasia Patient."
Dr. Stanford also spoke at the Australasian Osseointegration Society 8th Bioennial Conference, which was held in Adelaide, South Australia, November 9-12, 2011. His two keynote presentations were "The Nature of the Implant Surface: What Matters" and "Implant Dimensions: Balancing Mechanical Demands and Biology."
On March 1, 2012, Dr. Stanford will be inducted as a fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) during the organization's annual meeting.
Dr. Deborah Dawson, director of the Biostatistics Unit, and professor, Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr. James Wefel, Dows and Pediatric Dentistry, attended the scientific session of the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research. The session was held in Newark, New Jersey, on November 7-8, 2011. Dr. Wefel, who was one of four featured speakers, delivered a well-received presentation on "The Potential Role of Salivary Enhancers in Remineralization."
The Task Force was formed to foster and promote the use of sound and innovative methodologies in the design and analysis of oral health clinical research.
Chelsea Twohig (D3), current president of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) at Iowa, and Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, and mentor for the Iowa HSDA, attended the 19th Annual Meeting of the Hispanic Dental Association. The meeting was held on November 3-5, 2011, in San Diego, California. Chelsea participated in the Orgullo Competition with a poster presentation, "Collaboration to Improve Oral Health and Dental Education for Hispanics in Iowa." The poster summarized the Iowa HSDA chapter goals, mission, and accomplishments. Co-authors on the poster were Aaron Figueroa (D4), Maranda Bisell (D3), and Dr. Marcela Hernandez, who is Chelsea's mentor.
The Iowa HSDA chapter also provided information and samples of the Spanish Educational materials to a large number of interested attendees from different dental schools, community practice leaders, and private practitioners. The materials were developed by the UI Pediatric Dentistry Department with the collaboration of IASDA and HSDA, as a part of the Delta Dental mini grant. Procter and Gamble (P&G) representatives and sponsors of the Orgullo Competition attended Chelsea's poster presentation and were very impressed the the Iowa HSDA's involvement and achievements.
As a representative of the Iowa HSDA, Chelsea was one of six chapters selected to do an oral presentation documenting the previous year's activities during a dinner hosted by P&G. The dinner was attended by HSDA students, members, and faculty advisors from 24 universities.
Dr. Bruce Justman, Department of Endodontics, was recently inducted into the American College of Dentists (ACD). Membership in the ACD is by invitation only. There are more than 7,400 fellows in the organization; the American College of Dentists inducted 318 dentists at their recent October 2011 meeting in Las Vegas.
Dr. David Drake, Department of Endodontics and Dows, was one of three UI faculty who received the Brody Award for Faculty Excellence to the university and the state of Iowa.
The Brody Award is named in honor of the late Michael J. Brody, former president of the UI Faculty Senate. The award recognizes faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the UI and the community.
Dr. Drake has served on 23 university committees, including the Faculty Policy and Compensation Committee, the Faculty/Staff Budget Committee, the Judicial Commission, and the Government Relations Committee. He also served on the committee that completed this year's provost search, and he currently chairs the Committee on Selection of High Academic Officials. This summer, he was appointed senior associate to UI President Sally Mason. He has also served as president of the UI Faculty Senate.
Henry Husemann, MDT, CDT, Department of Prosthodontics, has successfully completed several years of rigorous coursework and an exam to raise his professional level from a certified dental technician (CDT) to a master dental technician (MDT). In 2011, he finished the coursework, which consisted of typical and non-typical academic agenda, quizzes, a final, and a full mouth wax-up he presented to a New York University (NYU) Board of Review before taking their final oral exam. The curriculum that Henry studied includes the stomatognathic system; occlusion; TMJ (temporomandublar joint); TMD (temporomandibular disorders); THA (true hinge axis); CR (centric relation); CO (central occlusion); paragraph tracings; face bow transfer materials sciences; etc.
Henry joined the College of Dentistry Department of Prosthodontics in 2004.
Dr. Kim A. Brogden, professor in the Dows Institute and Department of Periodontics, was invited as a featured speaker for the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy's Symposium on Drug Discover and Development. The purpose of the symposium, which was held October 13, 2011, was to: a) showcase cutting-edge research in drug discover and development to the local scientific community; b) encourage collaboration in basic and translational research throughout the University of Kentucky campus; c) synergize with the numerous interests of researchers at the University of Kentucky; and d) allow students an opportunity to interact with the outstanding leaders of this field. As one of three guest scientists, Dr. Brogden presented his work, "HBD3 modulation of chemokin and pro-inflammatory cytokin responses -- it's all in the timing," discussed results with attending faculty, and met with several pharmacy graduate students to discuss their work.
Professor Julie Holloway, who recently joined the UI Department of Prosthodontics, has agreed to serve as interim DEO of the department. Dr. Holloway, who has served in prosthodontics for 18 years, received her DDS and MS in prosthodontics from Ohio State University where she was a faculty member in the prosthodontics department and director of the advanced prosthodontic graduate program.
Dr. Galen Schneider has served as DEO in the Department of Prosthodontics since 2006 and has been a faculty member of the department since 1999. He will now serve as executive associate dean of the College of Dentistry.
Dr. James Q. Swift, a 1980 DDS graduate from Iowa, received the William J. Gies Foundation Award during the opening ceremony of the 93rd Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions, and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). The meeting was held September 14, 2011.
After graduating with a DDS from Iowa, Dr. Swift completed a general practice residency at Oklahoma Children's Memorial Hospital and his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He is professor and director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is well known for his research in inflammatory mediators and pain and has received an R01 award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to study pain and pain management. He has also performed clinical research in temporomandibular disorders and inflammatory mediators of the temperomandibular joint space. Dr. Swift has also been a principle investigator on implant research, including premarket approval studies for several implant systems.
Dr. Galen Schneider, DDS, PhD, FACP, will become the new executive associate dean effective September 1, 2011. Dr. Schneider earned his DDS from Iowa in 1991 and his certificate in prosthodontics and PhD in cell biology from the University of North Carolina (1996), where he also served on the faculty. Professor Schneider returned to Iowa in 1999 and for the past five years has served as the DEO for the Department of Prosthodontics. His background as a teacher, clinician, board-certified prosthodontist; his strong collaborative research and numerous publications; his experience in integrating new technologies and team building; and his active role on the College’s Executive Committee will serve him well in his new position. Dr. Schneider looks forward to engaging and working with the College of Dentistry’s associate deans, Executive Committee, faculty, staff, students, patients, alumni, and friends.
Dr. Evanthia Anadioti, a graduate fellow in the Department of Prosthodontics, has been selected as this year's recipient of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (AAED) Grant for Research in Esthetic Dentistry. This grant's goal is to provide meaningful research in esthetic dentistry. The AAED views her grant proposal, "Internal and marginal fit of pressed and CAD lithium disilicate crowns made from digital and conventional impressions," as "timely and relevant." She will receive $3,885 for funding the costs of her study.
Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics and Dows, was a recipient of the Sydney University Graduates Union North America (SUGUNA) James Wolfensohn Award. He receive the award during the SUGUNA Annual Conference, which was held August 4-7, 2011, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Dr. Ettinger was honored for making significant contributions for the betterment of society and his profession. He is a University of Sydney graduate and has long been a member of SUGUNA.
Dr. Philip Wertz, Dows and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, and Dr. Kim Brogden, Dows and Department of Periodontology, recently attended the Gordon Conference, which was held in Waterville Valley, NH. There were 177 people who attended the meeting, which was held August 8-12, 2011. Conference goers from 20 countries attended.
Dr. Brogden gave a presentation entitled "Lipids and peptides as skin antimicrobial barries."
Dr. Wertz was co-vice chair for this meeting, and he will be co-chair for the 2013 Gordon Conference Meeting.
A conference related to the College of Dentistry's extramural programs was held in West Des Moines, Iowa, on July 29, 2011. The purpose of the conference was to update current and potential site directors and adjunct faculty about the extramural programs, build collaborations with community partners, network among the programs, and update sites about current treatment philosophies taught at the College of Dentistry.
Representatives from Delta Dental of Iowa, the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Oral and Health Delivery Systems, and the Iowa Primary Care Association also attended the conference. Dean David Johnsen; Drs. Michelle McQuistan, Preventive and Community; Mike Kanellis, Clinic Administration; and Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, presented at the conference, which was funded through grants from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation and the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). Dr. Dan Caplan, head, Preventive & community, also attended the conference.
Dr. Christopher Squier, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, and Dows Institute for Dental Research, recently gave two smoking cessation workshops and two presentations in Singapore.
On July 4, 2011, Dr. Squier gave a smoking cessation workshop for school dental therapists. The workshop was sponsored by the Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB).
On July 9, through the auspices of the HPB, he presented a continuing education workshop for healthcare workers who are interested in smoking cessation. Dr. Squier was a guest speaker for the HPB/Singapore Dental Association Seminar. His talk was entitled, "Oral Health Disease and Smoking."
On July 29 at the National University of Singapore, Dr. Squier presented "Dying for a Smoke -- the Role of Health Professionals in Tobacco Control."
Dr. Squier was also invited to present "A Perspective on Global Health in Southeast Asia" at a seminar in Sinapore on August 10 that was sponsored by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.
Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, has received a Collegiate Teaching Award for the 2010-11 academic year. The award represents the highest honor a college can bestow upon its faculty for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. This year, eighteen UI faculty received the award.
Dr. Hernandez directs the dental anatomy course for first-year dental students and is involved in clinical teaching of students at all levels. She incorporates innovative teaching methods and makes time outside normal class periods to students master dental anatomy. As a role model for her graduate students, she offers summer training to assist them in teaching dental anatomy and evaluating techniques. She directs an orientation seminar for pre-dental students and also mentors the Iowa Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association, which won first place at the National Hispanic Dental Association's annual meeting for a poster presentation detailing the chapter's outreach to Iowa's Hispanic community.
On July 29, Dr. Christopher Barwacz, visiting assistant professor, Dows, was invited to give a presentation at the 2011 Platform for Exchange of Education, Research, and Science (PEERS) North America Meeting, which was held in Chicago. His talk was entitled, "Implementation and Translating Esthetic Implant Provisionalization: Applications and Challenges."
On July 30, Dr. Barwacz attended the 2011 Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Annual Meeting, where he was a recipient of the Fellowship (FAGD) Award in San Diego, California. The status of Fellow is awarded after completing 500 or more CE credit hours and passing a written board exam comprising all areas of general and restorative dentistry.
Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics and Dows, recently gave presentations during a trip to Australia. On July 15, 2011, he presented "Rational Dental Care for Older Adults: a Discussion" at the University of Sydney.
He also presented "The Treatment of Frail and Functionally Dependent Older Adults in Alternate Care Settings" on July 19 during his visit to the University of Melbourne. Both talks focused on the advantages and disadvantages of alternate dental care delivery such as regional or community clinics, mobile dental vans, flying dental services in remote areas, portable dental equipment, mobile dental equipment, and teledentistry.
Since 2009, in collaboration with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), St. Ambrose University has hosted an annual summer day camp for middle school age students (7th and 8th graders), which focuses on health careers. On Wednesday, July 20, nineteen students, along with five chaperones from this program, visited the College of Dentistry. Dr. Steven Aquillo, Department of Prosthodontics, provided information and instruction about taking impressions and pouring models. The students were then taken to the Operative/Preventive Clinic to practice taking impressions on each other. Senior dental students, Karl Kohlgraf, Sandy Imoehl, and Matthew Zwart assisted Dr. Aquilino in guiding and supervising the students. Following the impression taking, the students were escorted to the Support Lab to pour models.
Dr. Kelvin Khng, a resident in the Department of Prosthodontics, has received a $6,000 Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Graduate Thesis Award for his graduate thesis project, "In vitro evaluation of CAD/CAM provisional crowns compared to provisional resin crowns."

Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics, is the recipient of the 2011 Abram and Sylvia Chasens Teaching and Research Fellowship, which is awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation. This $15,000 fellowship is awarded to new new periodontal educators who have justj completed their post-graduate programs to help them launch their careers. It is one of the special awards that the AAP Foundation has developed to encourage talented graduates to enter an academic career. The recipients are selected based on integrity, academic and personal achievement, and aptitude for teaching and research.
Dr. Elangovan holds a doctor of science from Boston Unviersity; a BDS from MGR Medical University in Chennai, India; and a certificate in periodontics and doctor of medical science from Harvard University.
Dr. Daniel Caplan, head of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, was inducted into the 2012 class of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute during the recent annual ADEA meeting, which was held in San Diego, CA.
Dr. Caplan is one of 24 U.S. dental education leaders who was selected. During the next year, the ADEA Leadership Institute Fellows will gain skills to advance as academic dental leaders and be offered guidance on academic dental college issues.
Former participants from the College of Dentistry include Drs. Rebecca Slayton, Galen Schneider, David Holmes, Clark Stanford, Georgia Johnson, Michael Kanellis, Jed Hand, Steven Goepferd (now retired), Nelson Logan (now at the University of Florida), and Patrick Lloyd (currently dean at the University of Minnesota.)
Drs. Satheesh Elangovan and Paula Weistroffer, Department of Periodontics, are recipients of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation Scholarship for the 2011 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) / Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL). The scholarships will pay for their full $4,950 tuition for the ITL program. Normally, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation funds five scholarships each year, but this year because of strong applications, the foundation will fund seven scholarships. The ITL program includes 6.5 days of training in two phases and provides large and small group learning sessions, interactive exercises, case-based and problem-based learning, peer observation of teaching, and reflective journals, as well as mentored rotations with dental school faculty.
In 2009, Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz, a new faculty member of the Department of Periodontics, received a scholarship to attend the Institute for Teaching and Learning after completing his MS and certificate in periodontics from the University of Michigan.
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry recently received a $15,000 grant towards its Community Outreach and Dental Care Programs from the National Children's Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF). The mission of the NCOHF is to eliminate pediatric oral disease and promote overall health and well-being for millions of children from vulnerable populations. NCOHF is a comprehensive resource provider for non-profit community programs delivering critical preventive, educational, and treatment services.
Funding from this grant will enable the department to expand and enhance their current community outreach program who have dental treatment needs but lack financial support and access to care may be eligible to participate.
Ms. Cathy Skotowski and Ms. Gayle Gilbaugh, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, are the lead investigators for this project.
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, recently was invited to give a keynote presentation at Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon (Rafic Hariri campus). His talk was entitled, "Integrating Predictable Esthetics into Practice."
Dr. Stanford also gave a second presentation during his visit: "Impact of Digital Environment on Clinical Practice."
His keynote presentation was part of Lebanese University's 60th anniversary activities. The university, which was established in 1951, is the only public institution for higher learning in Lebanon.
On June 23, 2011, Dr. Stanford also gave an invited presentation at the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics in Anaheim, California: "The Young Adult Patient Presents with Missing Teeth: What Do You Do?"
Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, who received his pediatric dentistry certificate from Iowa in 2003, has been appointed vice chair of the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Communications. The Council is responsible for advising the ADA on issues such as reputation management or advising the ADA on the image and brand implications of Association plans, programs services and activities. The council also advises the ADA about strategic communication plans and policies between itself, the public, members, and the profession. Dr. Shenkin's vice chairmanship will be a one-year appointment. After one year, if no one opts to run for the chairmanship, Dr. Shenkin will become chair of the Council.
Currently, Dr. Shenkin has a full-time pediatric dentistry practice in Augusta, Maine. He is also a part-time clinical assistant professor of health policy, health services research, and pediatric dentistry at Boston University School of Dental Medicine as well as an ADA expert media spokesperson in pediatric dentistry.
From 2009-2010, Dr. Shenkin was president of the Maine Dental Association.
Dr. Tad Mabry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has been selected as a recipient of the Master Clinician Scholarship for 2011-2012. The scholarship provides all fees for the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) program as well as the course fee to participate in any upcoming AAPD Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry classes.
Dr. Mabry will attend the Academy for Academic Leadership's Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - School of Dentistry. The 2011 dates for Phase I are August 18-21 and Phase II will be held October 21-23, 2011. He will also have the opportunity to attend the AAPD Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry course in the location of their choice.
Dr. Steven Armstrong has agreed to serve as interim DEO for the Department of Operative Dentistry beginning July 1, 2011. Dr. Armstrong received his certificate in operative dentistry and PhD in oral science in 1998 and joined the department in 1999.
Dr. Gerald Denehy, who has served as DEO, will continue in his roles of teaching and patient care after having served as department head since 2002. From 2001-2002, Dr. Denehy also served as acting head of the department.
Dr. Arthur Nowak, faculty emeritus of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). He was honored with the award for his years of dedicated service. He served on the Board of Directors from 1984-1990 and was president of the board in 1991. He has served as executive director of the ABPD since 2002.
Dr. Nowak became a diplomate of the ABPD in 1971.
Julie Hendricks (D3) has received the 2011 Best Student Abstract Award from the Nutrition Research Group of the International/American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR). She received the $500 monetary reward as a result of her poster presentation, "In vitro Investigation of Erosive Potentials of Herbal Teas," at the 89th General Session and Exhibition of the IADR meeting, which was held in San Diego, CA.
Julie's co-authors were Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community; Jeff Harless, Dows; Maggie Hogan, Dows; Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit; and Dr. James Wefel, director of Dows. Dr. Marshall is Julie's mentor.
Dr. Alexandria P. Matthews (DDS '11) was awarded a certificate and a year's subscription to the Journal of Endodonticsfrom the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). She was given the award for displaying the highest degree of proficiency and interest in the field of endodontics and for exemplifying the ideals of the American Association of Endodontists.
Dr. Julie Graf (DDS '11) was recently awarded a plaque from the International College of Dentists (ICD) as a senior dental student who showed the most professional growth and development during four years of dental study. Dr. Keith Krell (DDS '81, MS '83), district deputy of the International College of Dentists, presented the award to her.
David Drake, professor in the Department of Endodontics and the Dows Institute for Dental Research, has been named senior associate to UI President Sally Mason. Dr. Drake succeeds UI law professor Jon Carlson, who has served in the position since January 2008. He will serve a two-year renewable term.
Dr. Drake will advise President Mason on issues relating to the university and higher education; coordinate special projects; schedule monthly presidential forums; work with group presenting initiatives to the president's office; and develop initiatives to advance the president's vision, among other tasks.
Dr. Drake served as president of the UI Faculty Senate from 2009-2010 and was recently named by the National Institutes for Health as a permanent member of the Oral, Dental, and Craniofacial Sciences Study Section. He is a member of the American and International Associations for Dental Research, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dean David Johnsen was awarded the Iowa Dental Association’s Special Recognition Award for extraordinary contributions to the dental profession. The Iowa Dental Association (IDA) honored Dr. Johnsen and other award recipients in a special ceremony during the association’s recent annual session in Coralville.
Dr. William Strohman, immediate past-president of the Iowa Dental Association, said that “Dr. Johnsen has demonstrated through his actions the very best of our profession. It is our honor to recognize his ongoing dedication to furthering the profession of dentistry.”
Dean Johnsen’s professional service has included the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Board of Directors (1988-1991); president of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) from 2002-2003; board member of the American Dental Education Association Council of Deans (1998-2001); and Child Health (legislative) Advocate, 1992-1995.
At the University of Iowa, he has served chair of the search for the UIHC CEO (2002); co-convener of the Health Sciences Policy Council (2003-2004); co-chair of the University Task Force on Clinical/Translational Research (2005-2006); chair of the nursing dean search (2006); chair of the presidential search (2007); and chair of the UI Museum of Art director search.
Dean Johnsen received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (1996); the Achievement Award from the Ohio Dental Association (1992); and the Jack Hein Public Service Award from the American Association for Dental Research (2010).
Dr. David Drake, Department of Endodontics, and Dows Institute for Dental Research, has been selected to serve as a member of the Oral, Dental and Craniofacial Sciences Study Section, Center for Scientific Review by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Drake was chosen because of the quality of his research accomplishments, publications, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.
The study section will review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on the applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council, or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of sciences. Dr. Drake's term will begin July 1, 2011, and end June 30, 2015.
Dr. Elham Kateeb, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, received a 2011 Student Travel Award of $400 for her oral presentation, "Clinical Training on ART in Pediatric Dentistry Residency Programs" during the recent annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Dr. Kateeb was given the award by the Education Research Group of the IADR, which is committed to support student research, especially work that promotes advances in teaching and learning, to influence the future direction of dental education. Dr. Kateeb's work was judged to be the best of all of the Education Research Group orals and posters in the student category.
Dr. Cheryl L. Straub-Morarend, Department of Family Dentistry, has been elected as an officer of the Comprehensive Care/General Dentistry Section of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Dr. Straub-Morarend will serve one year as newspaper editor, one year as secretary, one year as chair elect, and then one year as chair of ADEA's Comprehensive Care/General Dentistry Section for 2014-2015.
Dr. John Scieszinski, Department of Family Dentistry, has been elected as an officer of the Section on Practice Management of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Dr. Scieszinski will serve one year as newsletter editor, one year as secretary/treasurer, one year as chair elect, and one year as chair of ADEA's Section on Practice Management for 2013- 2014.
Current officers and members of the ADEA Section on Practice Management were impressed by Dr. Scieszinski's knowledge and insights on practice management, his private practice experience, and his enthusiasm. Dr. David Holmes, head of the Department of Family Dentistry, said, "We recognize that this selection is a testament to the strong national reputation that Dr. Larry J. Squire has established for the Practice Management curriculum at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry."
The University of Iowa College of Dentistry will conduct a waste audit in commemoration of Earth Month, from 9 am to 1 pm on April 14, in the area just east of the Dental Science Building. Dean David Johnsen will provide opening remarks at 10:00 am.
The waste audit, the second for the college, will help to measure the effectiveness of the College’s efforts to reduce waste, recycle and reuse and to identify additional sustainability-related opportunities, in particular, composting. The college’s first waste sort was organized in September 2008 by its Go Green Committee, a group of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to supporting the UI’s mission to reduce its environmental footprint through education, sustainable environmental practices, and social responsibility.
The audit data helped launch new practices including using recycling containers, recycling of disposable clinic gowns, powering down computers, using energy-efficient hand dryers in restrooms, buying supplies in bulk and the addition of bike racks.

Third-year dental students, Kelly Huston and Shannon Rea, were nominated by the College of Dentistry for a Hancher-Finkbine Medallion Award. Each collegiate dean may nominate two students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, learning and loyalty.
Winners and nominees, which included outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni, were recognized on April 5, 2011, at the 94th anniversary Finkbine dinner, which is one of the university's most prestigious award ceremonies.
Dr. Supitcha Talungchit, a PhD candidate in the Department of Operative Dentistry, was awarded a $300 travel grant for her presentation, "Effect of photoinitiator on adhesive resin conversion and dentin bonding." She was given the award through the Dr. Eunice Schuytema Beam Travel Grant, which is part of the UI Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program. Co-authors on her presentation were Dr. Steven Armstrong, Supitcha's mentor, and Dr. Joseph Antonucci, now retired from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Dr. Talungchit has completed her certificate in operative dentistry; she is now working on her PhD in oral science.
Dean David Johnsen and Ann Synan, Dental Clinic Administration, traveled to Des Moines on March 3, 2011, to celebrate the UI Health Sciences Day at the State Capitol and to meet with state legislators. Discussion included the multiple contributions of the College of Dentistry's state outreach services, and also the current building transformation project.
The College's booth highlighted the extent of the College's outreach programs, including alumni practicing in various Iowa counties, and patient visits, as well as information about the current building transformation. Toothbrushes and magnets were distributed and information about patient services and contact phone numbers were offered.
Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has been selected as the recipient of the Olav Alvares Award for Outstanding Articles Published in the Journal of Dental Education. Dr. Weber-Gasparoni was author of the article "Iowa's Public Health-Based Infant Oral Health Program: a Decade of Experience." Dr. Michael Kanellis, Dental Clinic Administration, and Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit, were co-authors.
Annually, the Journal of Dental Education presents awards to recognize junior faculty, allied and predoctoral students, residents, and fellows who publish outstanding work. Dr. Weber-Gasparoni's article appeared in the April 2010 issue of Journal of Dental Education.
Dr. Philip Wertz, OPRM and Dows, and Dr. Kim Brogden, Periodontics and Dows, attended the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists Chapter Meeting in Washington Township, New Jersey, in early March. Drs. Wertz and Brogden were both invited speakers for the meeting whose theme was Innate Immunity of the Skin.
Dr. Wertz's talk centered on the role of lipids in innate immunity of the skin. Dr. Brogden talked about the role of peptides in innate immunity of the skin.
Dean David Johnsen and Dr. Rebecca Slayton, head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, visited the Iowa State Capitol on February 11 to witness Governor Terry Branstad sign a proclamation declaring February as Children's Dental Health Month.
As part of Children's Dental Health Month, many Iowa dentists participated in Give Kids a Smile® by assisting children from low-income families. Dentist participation included visiting daycare centers to talk to children about the importance of teeth brushing and establishing healthy dietary habits; providing free exams and cleanings; and/or providing free extractions and restorative work. Iowa dentists have also participated in Donated Dental Services (DDS), a program that assists disabled or elderly people who cannot pay for dental treatment and who lack financial assistance. Another program, the Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) provides two days of free dental care on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year, Iowa dentists who participated in IMOM served almost 1,400 patients with more than $950,000 in free dental health services. This year, the 2011 IMOM will be held in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) held its 58th annual meeting on February 15, 2011. The keynote speaker was Lawrence E. Brecht, DDS, New York University. His keynote address was “Advances in Cleft Palate Care – the University of Iowa-New York University Medical Center Connection.”
Oral, poster, and table clinic presentations followed Dr. Brecht’s address. There were 57 predoctoral, postdoctoral, post-graduate, faculty, and staff who participated.
Corporate and organization sponsors included Procter and Gamble, DENTSPLY North America, the American Dental Association, the Iowa Society of Periodontology, and the Iowa Association of Endodontists. Dr. Leslie Winston, Procter and Gamble, attended the meeting and presented the Procter and Gamble pre-doctoral awards at the banquet, which was held at the Coralville Holiday Inn that evening.
The committee for the 58th annual meeting included Dr. Justine Kolker, Operative Dentistry, who is currently president of the Iowa Section of AADR; Dr. Cathia Bergeron, Operative Dentistry, currently vice president of the organization; Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, past president of the Iowa Section of AADR; and Dr. Yong Joon Coe, Prosthodontics, currently secretary/treasurer of the organization.
Dr. John Warren, Preventive & Community Dentistry, is director of the Dental Student Research Program; Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community Dentistry, is assistant director; and Sara Anstoetter, Dows, is program administrator.
Dr. David Drake, Endodontics and Dows, and Dr. John Warren, Preventive & Community Dentistry, were among the 50 attendees at a meeting that was featured in an ADA News article about the second Symposium on Early Childhood Caries in American Indian and Alaska Native Children. The symposium was held October 20-22, 2010, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Attendees included dental researchers, clinicians, tribal health and dental public health representatives.
The article, which appeared in the January 17, 2011 issue of ADA News, described the scientific presentations, workgroup activities, and discussions about future goals.
The article also interviewed Dr. Drake, who established the first formal NIH-funded research contract with Oglala Sioux American Indian tribe. As a microbiologist who has been studying the transmission of early childhood caries in children, Dr. Drake said, "I am committed to working toward understanding the microbiological components of this devastating and unbelievably rapid disease in American Indian children. I am indeed passionate about this."
The symposium was sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Oral Health America (with support from the DentaQuest Foundation), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations.
Dr. Steven Levy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, was recently interviewed by Washington Post staff writer, Juliet Eilperin, about the difficulty of measuring the difficulty of measuring the impact of fluoride on children's teeth. Ms. Eilperin noted that the amount of bottled water Americans drink today is twice the amount they consumed ten years ago. No comprehensive study has yet been done to evaluate the impact of bottled water, which lacks fluoride, on dental caries.
Dr. Levy, whose ongoing fluoride research has been studying the fluoride intake of participants since birth, noted, "Those who had more bottled water had a slight tendency to have more decay in the baby teeth but we had very small numbers." He added that it wasn't a definitive study.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says studies show fluoride reduces dental caries in adolescents by 8-37 percent. In adults, dental caries are reduced by 20-40 percent. Today, approximately 65 percent of Americans have fluoridated drinking water.
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, was a keynote speaker at the recent 36th Annual University of Southern California (USC) International Periodontal and Implant Symposium: Cutting Edge vs. Evidence Based. He gave two presentations: "Surgical Implant Placement -- Immediate Loading vs. Staged Loading in the Esthetic Zone" and "Role of Soft Tissue Esthetics in Management of Implant Outcomes."
The meeting was held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles.
Dr. Arthur Nowak, professor emeritus, Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr. Rebecca Slayton, head, Pediatric Dentistry, co-authored an article, "Facilitating the Transition of Patients with Special Health Care Needs from Pediatric to Adult Oral Health," which appeared in the November 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association. Dr. Paul Casamassimo, head of the pediatric dentistry department at Ohio State University's College of Dentistry, is also a co-author.
Of the 4,000 pediatric dentists who were contacted, 1,686 responded to the authors' pilot-tested survey that included demographic questions as well as questions pertaining to services and barriers in transitioning adolescent patiebnts, with and without special health care needs (SHCNs), to adult care. Of the pediatric dentists who responded to the survey, most said they helped adolescents, with and without SHCNs, transition into adult dental care. The authors found, however, that the primary obstacle was the availability of general or specialty dentists. To overcome this barrier, the authors recommended creating an office protocol to help transition patients to adult dental care.
A meeting was held December 15, 2010, at the College of Dentistry to discuss the rationale and strategies for meeting with state legislators, to ask them to introduce a bill requiring medical insurance carriers to pay for orthodontics. Orthodontics is an integral part of treatment for a patient with a craniofacial anomaly, most often cleft lip or palate. Attendees included Dr. Michael Kanellis, Clinic Administration; Drs. Andrew Lidral and Lina Moreno- Uribe, Orthodontics; State Representative Mary Mascher; Senator Bob Dvorsky; Colleen Chipman, Patient Accounts; and Dean David Johnsen.
The Student National Dental Association (SNDA) was able to collect and donate 25-30 toys to children through the Salvation Army. Because of the large initial response to their project, the SNDA "adopted" a single father and three young sons through the Crisis Center. In addition to presents of clothes, shoes, books, and toys, the family also received much-needed household items.
Four UI College of Dentistry dental students have been selected from 219 applicants to receive the 2011 American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Block Travel Grant: Sandra Imoehl (D3) -- mentor, Dr. Jeff Murray, College of Medicine); Jason Rogers (D3 -- mentor: Dr. Andrew Lidral, Department of Orthodontics); Brian Smith (D2 -- mentor: Dr. Jeff Murray, College of Medicine); Emily Wang (D1 -- mentors: Dr. Deborah Dawson, Biostatistics and Research Design, and Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni, Department of Pediatric Dentistry.) These students were selected based on the scientific excellence of the abstracts they submitted for the 89th General Session & Exhibition of the AADR in San Diego, California. Recipients will each receive a check for $1,150 to assist in paying for hotel and round-trip airfare to the meeting.
The 2011 AADR Bloc Travel Grants were awarded to the AADR by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
Dr. Steve Levy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, has published a cover story in the October 2010 issue of Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). In his article, "Associations between fluorosis of permanent incisors and fluoride intake from infant formula, other dietary sources and dentifrice during early childhood," Dr. Levy discusses associations between dental fluorosis and fluoride intakes, with an emphasis on intake from fluoride in infant formula. His conclusions from the research suggest that there is an increased risk for fluorosis in children aged 16 to 36 months who have greater fluoride intakes from reconstituted powder formulas (when participants were aged 3-9 months) and other water-added beverages (when participants were aged 3-9 months). Reducing the ingestion of large quantities of fluoride from reconstituted powdered concentrate infant formula and fluoridated dentifrice can help reduce mild dental fluorosis.
Co-authors include Barb Broffitt, Dr. Teresa Marshall, and Dr. John Warren, all from the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and Dr. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore, UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.
