Dr. Erica Teixeira and Dr. Restrepo Kennedy  receive Innovations in Teaching with Technology Award

Dr. Erica Teixeira and Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy in Operative Dentistry have received the Innovations in Teaching with Technology Award (ITTA). The goal of the ITTA program is to raise the level of teaching and learning at UI by supporting significant and innovative instructional technology projects that have the potential to directly impact student success and retention. The last time the College of Dentistry received this award was in 2002.

Their project “Enhancing caries management education using a 3D printed model” was awarded a total of $28,520 from the University of Iowa Academic Technologies Advisory Council and $5000 matching grant from the MW Finkelstein Centennial Teaching Professorship endowment fund.

With the advances of digital technology, digital imaging, and 3D printing, the proposal involves the creation and development of a novel prototype that is a realistic representation of the caries process according to various stages of the disease progression - from initial, moderate to extensive lesions, simulating the texture and feel of the affected tooth structure. Development of this model can help transform and support the educational process in managing caries disease throughout dental schools.

The Charlie English Community for Education Award is given in recognition of one of the most dedicated educators and teachers that dentistry has ever had, the Charlie English Community Education Award represents the ideals of the man for whom it is named.  Recipients of this award are at the top of their profession, lauded for their knowledge and skill; and yet are always more concerned with teaching and learning than they are with accolades and recognition.
