Course Description

This program will review current concepts in the management of medical emergencies in the dental office.  It will review important aspects of the medical history that may alert the dentist to patients who are at increased risk for medical complications and thus the need for emergency management.  The team approach will be emphasized in managing medical emergencies by the office personnel.  Case-based scenarios will be discussed.

Objectives

Participants should be able to:

  • Understand the relationship of a thorough medical history to patient risk in the dental office
  • Identify and manage the most common medical emergencies encountered in the dental office
  • Identify the emergency drugs and equipment necessary as part of the emergency kit
  • Create an office emergency plan for the dental office

Instructor

Dr. Kyle SteinDr. Kyle M. Stein, D.D.S., F.A.C.S., is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and College of Dentistry. Dr. Stein received his DDS degree in 2009 and his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certificate in 2013 from the University of Iowa. Dr. Stein joined the faculty at the College of Dentistry in 2013. Dr. Stein is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Stein practices a broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including outpatient sedation/general anesthesia, dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant surgery, hard and soft tissue grafting, orthognathic surgery, pathology, reconstruction, oral and maxillofacial trauma, management of odontogenic infections, and microsurgical nerve repair. He practices at the College of Dentistry, Hawkeye Oral Surgery, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
