A Practical Overview of the New 2018 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Condition

Course Description

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) joined forces to organize a World Workshop with the purpose of updating the previous classification of periodontal diseases and conditions from 1999 on the basis of contemporary evidence. This workshop, which was held in Chicago in November of 2017, congregated more than 120 experts in Periodontology and Oral Implantology from all over the world. The proceedings of the workshop translated into the publication in June 2018 of a new classification supported by 18 narrative or systematic reviews and four consensus reports. The new classification involves some major changes, in particular a new system for staging and grading periodontitis, the elimination or modification of classic concepts (e.g. biologic width) and, for the first time, the classification included peri-implant diseases and conditions.

Objectives

Participants should be to:

* Recognize the main categories contemplated in the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions

* Know the main differences between the current classification and the previous one from 1999, and its 2015 update

* Understand the rationale and scientific evidence supporting the new staging and grading system to classify periodontitis

* Discuss clinical considerations for diagnosing periodontal and peri-implant diseases using clinical cases

Instructors

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz is a Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He completed both a DDS and a PhD training program in his hometown at the University of Granada, Spain, before moving to Ann Arbor (USA), where he obtained a MS and Certificate in Periodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Avila-Ortiz currently serves as department chair (DEO). He served as director of the Advanced Education Program and the in Periodontics from 2016 to 2018. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and currently maintains an intramural faculty practice limited to Periodontics and Oral Implantology. Dr. Avila-Ortiz’s research spans a number of clinical topics, including the understanding of the influence of local and systemic individual patient factors on healing dynamics following periodontal therapy, as well as bone and soft tissue grafting, particularly in relation to therapeutic strategies for implant site development.

Dr. Theodoros Katsaros is a Board Certified periodontist and currently a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. In 2008, he attained his dental degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He served in the Greek army from 2002 until 2013 and practiced general dentistry in military hospitals and in private practice for five years, before moving to the US in 2013. In June of 2016, he received his certificate in Periodontics and an MSD in dentistry from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, School of Dentistry in New Orleans.
