The Institutional Training Program offers training opportunities in the area of oral health research at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry at the PhD and post-doctoral level. It focuses on dental graduates but is mindful of the role that the basic scientist plays in oral health research and thus also offers training opportunities for non-dentists. Limited support is available through a R90 component for non-citizen dentists, which reflects their increasingly important role in our oral health research and education programs. This progam occupies a central position in the overall effort of the College of Dentistry to develop promising individuals for careers as researchers, clinical scholars, and educators in the area of health research who are capable of successfully competing for external research support.
The research areas in which this training is offered reflect the strengths of the College of Dentistry and the allied health science colleges at the University of Iowa. The program represents an interdisciplinary effort involving almost forty faculty mentors from five colleges in the University. Training is available in the areas of:
Dr. Steven M. Levy, professor of Preventive and Community Dentistry, directs the training program. Dr. Brad A. Amendt, professor in the Department of Periodontics and director of the Iowa Dental & Craniofacial Anomalies Research Center, is the associate director. The Faculty Leadership Team consists of Dr. Christopher A. Squier, professor emeritus and previous training program director; Dr. Peter Damiano, director, University of Iowa Public Policy Center, and professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Isabel Denry, professor in the Department of Prosthodontics; Dr. John Keller, professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and dean of the Graduate College; Dr. Jeffrey A. Banas, director of the Oral Science MS and PhD programs and professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Jeffrey Murray, professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pediatric Dentistry.
These involve research training leading to a Ph.D. degree in oral science. This degree is awarded by the Graduate College of The University of Iowa and trainees must meet the requirements for entry to a doctoral program. For dentists, the Ph.D. will extend over three to five years full-time. The program also supports PhD training for graduates with a B.S. or M.S. degree who wish to pursue a career in oral health research. This is a five-year, full-time program.
This program is designed to allow postdoctoral trainees the opportunity to pursue advanced research training in one of the research program areas indicated above. Training positions will be available for up to two years for postdoctoral scholars who have obtained their Ph.D.
The program is funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health. Individuals who are accepted into the program will be eligible to receive a stipend on the NRSA scale (or equivalent for non-U.S. appointees), a tuition award, and support for supplies and travel.
