Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, low birth weight in babies, and other health problems. Once gum disease begins to destroy gum and bone around the teeth, a routine dental cleaning is not enough to stop the progress of the infection. It is a condition that should be taken seriously. It is preventable!

Periodontists at the College of Dentistry deal with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases and the maintenance of healthy gums. Scaling and root planing are periodontal procedures that remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smooth the root surfaces, allowing gum tissue to reattach to the tooth. Surgical periodontal procedures include tissue grafting, bone grafting, and dental implant placement.
