Oral surgeons may be known for extracting teeth, including “wisdom teeth,” but extractions are just one aspect of the procedures that these dental specialists perform.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons diagnose and surgically treat diseases, injuries and defects of the oral (teeth and mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) regions. An Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon at the College of Dentistry has extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and management of impacted teeth, such as “wisdom teeth” (third molars), misaligned jaws, and dental infections of the head and neck. They also treat facial injuries, perform bone grafting, care for patients with tumors and cysts of the jaws, and provide implant surgery for patients with missing teeth. Another significant part of their training is the acquisition of knowledge and skill in pain control methods, including intravenous sedation.
