Application Process for the D.D.S. Program

Completed AADSAS applications must be on file with the American Dental Education Association ( ADEA) by October 1. 

Recommendations to Candidates

For optimal consideration, submit your entire application (AADSAS application, DAT scores, letters of evaluation, official transcripts) in early June.  Preference is given to candidates who apply early.
Applications that are incomplete (missing DAT scores, less than 3 letters of evaluation, or transcripts) after October 15th will be cancelled.

Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation

Letters of evaluation are required of all applicants.  The University of Iowa, College of Dentistry, does not depict who authors your letters; we allow you to choose who can best speak to your character, experiences, and accomplishments.  Letters from an instructor, faculty member, dentist, academic adviser, or employer are typical.

Information about non-academic characteristics of a student is most useful as academic information is already available in the application. All letters should be submitted through the central application service, AADSAS.

Once an applicant designates from whom they are requesting letters, AADSAS will contact the writer with further instructions. We request three letters, however candidates may submit up to four through AADSAS.  It is advised that authors compose their letters on letterhead and provide their signature at the conclusion of their letter.

Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

Completion of the DAT, which is sponsored by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association, is a requirement for admission. Plan to complete the DAT no later than August of the year preceding the year for which you are seeking admission.

Interview

Following completion of the AADSAS application, no additional application fee should be sent to The University of Iowa unless it is requested.  

The Admissions Committee conducts an initial review of all materials submitted to determine whether a candidate will be invited to interview. Applicants invited to interview must schedule their interview within two weeks of receiving an interview invitation for any of the available dates provided to them.  Interview dates are on a first come, first serve basis. An on-site interview is required of all applicants under serious consideration for admission. Interviews are conducted on specific dates scheduled throughout the fall of an application cycle (typically September – November).

Failure to Attend Your Interview Applicants who sign up for an interview date and do not show will have their application canceled immediately.

Guest Policy Guests are welcome to wait in the College of Dentistry lobby for the duration of the interview program.

Annual Campus Security Report

The combined Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is available on the UI Department of Public Safety’s website at http://police.uiowa.edu/about/campus-security-act/.  If you would like to receive a paper copy of this report, you may contact the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety at 808 University Capitol Centre, Iowa City, IA 52242, or by calling (319) 335-5022.  The report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, fire safety, university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security and safety on campus. It also contains information about crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by UI; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.  This information is required by federal law.
